COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – MSU Denver closer
Eric Cox has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week.
Cox became the RMAC's all-time saves leader by earning his 23rd and 24th career saves in wins Thursday over Regis and Saturday over Colorado School of Mines.
The record of 23 had been held since 1999 by Nate Field of former RMAC member Fort Hays State (Kan.). Cox is Division II's active leader in career saves, and he is second nationally with five saves this season while posting a 1.13 ERA and striking out 14 in eight innings, allowing opponents to hit .172 and yielding one run on five hits with two walks. Both saves were of the four-out variety, as he entered the Regis game in the eighth with the go-ahead run at the plate, and the Mines game in the eighth with the go-ahead run at first base (and the bases loaded).
Both times he retired the first batter to end the inning, then worked a quick ninth. In his 2 2/3 innings, he allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five.
