@MSUDenverMSOC: Roadrunners Hit the Trail to Texas for Tough Teams

MSU Denver coming off prolific nine-goal outburst

DENVER – Fresh off once of the highest-scoring games in program history, the MSU Denver men's soccer team gets right back to work this week with an important road trip to Texas.

The Roadrunners play Thursday at 6 p.m. MDT at Lubbock Christian (Texas), before a 1 p.m. MDT matchup Saturday at traditionally strong and current Division II No. 7 Midwestern State (Texas).

"Last year, we didn't challenge ourselves enough in the non-conference, and I think that came back to bite us a little bit," MSU Denver coach Nick Kirchhof said. "This year, we knew we were going to try to schedule tougher teams."

Both MSU Denver opponents are 2-0 after beating Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes.

Lubbock Christian, picked sixth in the Lone Star Conference, beat Fort Lewis and Adams State, teams picked to finish ninth and 10th, respectively in the RMAC, 3-2 and 1-0.

Midwestern State, picked second in the Lone Star, won 3-0 at Westminster and 1-0 against Colorado Mesa. Those teams are picked to finish sixth and fourth, respectively, in the RMAC.

"Lubbock, that's a good environment against a tough opponent," Kirchhof said. "They have a lot of good players and a lot of new faces. Midwestern State has been a power since back when I was playing. We want to have a barometer of where we're at currently, but we also want to play some of the best competition so that it prepares us for RMAC play."

MSU Denver was the preseason choice to place seventh in the RMAC before losing 3-1 at Fort Hays State (Kan.) and then putting on an offensively display for the ages in a 9-0 victory over St. Cloud State (Minn.).

"On any day in college soccer, anybody could potentially do that to somebody," Kirchhof said. "There's a lot of factors that lead into it. What I was pleased with is that we kept improving, kept doing what we wanted to do regardless of what the situation was in the game. And that's what we want to do as a team, regardless of whether we're winning or losing. We want to keep the same mindset, to keep attack and keep being rock-solid defensively."
