DENVER – After more than a month without competition, the MSU Denver men's and women's indoor track & field teams are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Potts Invitational.
"This will be a good meet to gauge our fitness level and get in some good training," MSU Denver coach
Janis Christopher said. "They've been on their own since the UCCS meet (Dec. 9) until we worked as a team again on Monday. Based on what I've seen, everybody basically looked pretty good. Overall they did a really good job of finding ways to get in their training during the break."
This weekend's meet at the University of Colorado will feature the Roadrunners' throwers on Friday before the sprinters and hurdlers get involved Saturday.
At the team's December meet, first
Lushous Davis, and then
Grace Solarin herself, broke Solarin's program record in the weight throw set last season. Solarin's heave of 15.36 meters (50 feet, 4 ¾ inches) was more than four feet better than her previous best. Davis threw 14.83 meters. Solarin currently ranks 58
th in Division II and Davis is 80
th.
Maya Ries ranks 35
th in Division II in the 60-meter hurdles with a time converted for altitude to 8.94 seconds, while
Naleia Sowell is 43
rd and
Allyssa Romero is 48
th in the 400, with times converted for altitude and track size of 58.07 and 58.27, respectively.
Ries (8.76) and Romero (56.63) are school record holders in those events.
"There was a lot of really good stuff that happened in our first meet," Christopher said. "We knew that Naleia was at another level from where she was last year, we just weren't sure how that would translate. She and Allyssa should both be near the top of the RMAC this year.
"Grace had a big jump in the weight throw, and Maya was phenomenal in the hurdles, much faster than she's been in December the last two years."
