hPUEBLO, Colo. -- Naleia Sowell broke school records in both the 200 and 400 meters on Saturday to lead the MSU Denver men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Spank Blasing Invitational.
The women's 400 was a highlight event with two Roadrunners placing on the podium. Sowell's first-place time of 56.06 seconds smashed the 56.38 run by Zelda Thomas in 1984.
Allyssa Romero who now ranks third among MSU Denver individuals in the event, ran 56.90 for second. In the 200, Sowell was sixth in 24.90 to top the previous school record of 25.04 by
Claire Hummel last year. Closely behind was Romero in 25.0, a personal best that is MSU Denver's second-best time ever in the event.
Sowell's 400 time, converted to 56.17 for altitude, is the best in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this season, while her 200 time (converted to 24.85) ranks seventh.
Also Saturday,
Maya Ries placed fifth in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.57, freshman Alexa McAfee placed seventh in the 3,000 steeplechase in 12:29.55, Mia Slas was ninth in the 1,500 in 4:49.94, while finishing 10th in the 400 was junior
Raygen Ivins in 1:01.37.
Salas became MSU Denver's eighth-fastest individual all-time in the 1,500.
Grace Solarin had two of her best efforts, finishing 10th in the discus with a throw of 127 feet, 10 1/2 inches, and 12th in the shot put with personal-best throw of 39-0.
Avery Enney finished 13th in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.45 meters (4-9), making her MSU Denver's fourth-best individual all-time in that event, while Breauna Sorenson moved into fourth on MSU Denver's all-time individual list in the long jump with a 19th-place effort of 5.17 (16-11 1/2).
For the men,
Sean Pecenka was seventh in the 110-hurdles in a personal-best 15.01, and
Owen Clarke was seventh in the 400 in 48.96.
The Roadrunners will be back competing in Pueblo, Colo. again next weekend at the Chuck Haering Open Invitational.
