@RoadrunnerSB: After Historic Offensive Production, MSU Denver Seeks to Sharpen Other Areas

Roadrunners travel to Fort Lewis for four-game series

DENVER – After the craziest game in the history over MSU Denver softball – the 38-16 win to close the series at Adams State on Friday – the Roadrunners are getting back to business this week.

"After the game I said, 'There's a lot to unpack here,'" MSU Denver coach Annie Van Wetzinga said. "Good job winning four games. Hitters good job. Let's all go home."

MSU Denver, 33-7 overall and first in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 26-2, travels to Fort Lewis for another four-game series set for doubleheaders at noon Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday.

Though there's something to be said for scoring 38 runs in a game – it was one of several RMAC records the Roadrunners set – it's a bit disconcerting to have allowed 16, the third-highest total in program history. And, while the wind certainly had much to do with that, MSU Denver would also prefer to give up fewer than the average of 5.7 it allowed in the first three games of the series.

"We need to clean some stuff up," Van Wetzinga said. "We haven't been our sharpest the last few weekends (despite going 10-2). We're still doing great things – great offensive numbers, we have a great record, we're first in the conference … all those things are great. But we haven't been sharp in some areas. We want to get back to that and to competing consistently a little better, to putting a full seven innings together, to being who we are and playing at the level we know we can play at.

"Because we know what the end of the season looks like (series with Colorado Christian, Colorado Mesa and Colorado School of Mines), and we know going to Durango (to play Fort Lewis) is going to be tough. We've really challenged them to look within themselves to see how they as individuals can get better and then how we as a team can get better."

Fort Lewis is 8-25 overall and 6-18 for 10th in the RMAC.

"They're always tough at home," Van Wetzinga said. "It's a long road trip. Their No. 1 pitcher can do some good things – she can locate really well and get ground balls if you aren't putting good swings on it, and if you're not attacking early in the count. They aren't deep in pitching, so we need to make her work. You have to take what she gives you – take your singles and string things together."
