LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The No.6 Metro State women's soccer team edged New Mexico Highlands 1-0 on Sunday behind
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.)' penalty kick in the 48th minute in Las Vegas, N.M.
The Roadrunners did not allow a shot attempt for the second time this season and just the fourth time in school history. Metro State also held Nebraska-Kearney without a shot attempt on Oct. 4. Before that, the last time Metro State achieved the rare feat was on Aug. 28, 1998, against Montana State-Billings.
The win on Sunday improved the Roadrunners to 16-1-0 overall and 13-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. It was also their 14th consecutive win, the second-longest winning streak in Metro State history. The Cowgirls dropped to 2-15-0 overall and 2-10-0 in the RMAC this season.
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) was taken down inside the box as she was breaking away towards the goal on the left side, just over two minutes into the second half. McQuilliams converted the ensuing penalty kick for the game's only goal.
The Roadrunners had plenty of scoring opportunities as three shots in the second half hit the crossbar or the post, two coming from Mays in the 70th and 86th minutes and the other by
Ashley Nemmers (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) in the 76th minute. Metro State also had a goal taken away on a controversial offsides call.
NMHU goalkeeper Shannon Delarosbil made four saves in the game as Metro State had 15 shot attempts.
Mays had seven shot attempts to lead the Roadrunners, followed by
Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) with three.
Metro State will play at Nebraska-Kearney on Friday.
