DENVER, Colo. - The No. 4 Metro State women's soccer team captured its eighth straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship on Sunday with a 5-1 win over UC-Colorado Springs at home. The Roadrunners over came a 1-0 halftime deficit with a five-goal flurry from five different players in the second half.
They originally clinched the conference championship two weeks ago on Oct. 23 with a win at Nebraska-Kearney.
Metro State won its 17th consecutive game to improve to 19-1-0 overall and 15-0-0 in the RMAC this season. UCCS fell to 7-9-1 overall and 6-9-1 in the RMAC.
It is also the second consecutive conference championship for second year head coach Adrianne Almaraz. The Roadrunners are now 39-3-3 overall and 27-0-2 in the RMAC under Almaraz.
A sluggish first half for the Roadrunners began with a UCCS goal just over four minutes into the contest. Julia Saenz's corner kick from the right side deflected off Josi Heer's head to Jessika Williams, who headed the ball into the net to stun Metro State. That was the only shot attempt for the Mountain Lions in the first half, but Metro State managed to put just four if its 13 first half shot attempts on goal.
The Mountain Lion goal snapped a streak of six consecutive games that Metro State did not allow a goal. The school record is nine.
Metro State came out fired up in the second half, taking five shots in the first 11 minutes of the second half before
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) netted the equalizer in the 57th minute.
Aleah DeGeneres (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) got the first touch on
Courtney Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado H.S.)'s corner kick and deflected it towards McQuilliams, who was just a yard in front of the net as she tapped the ball past UCCS goalkeeper Ashley Armstrong.
Ryan scored on her own corner kick just two minutes later she her corner from the right side went through Armstrong's hands and into the net to put Metro State in front for the first time in the game.
Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) got ahead of the defense on the left side in the 66th minute and drew a pair of defenders before she crossed the ball to
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) in front of the net. Mays was all by herself and was able to put the ball past the UCCS goalkeeper with ease.
Mays' goal was her 20th this season. It is the second season in a row that Mays has scored over 20 goals after scoring 22 times last year, and it is the eighth time in school history at Roadrunner has reached 20 goals in a season.
Metro State was not finished and added another just four minutes later.

Ashley Nemmers (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.)' deflected shot. Ryan earned her second assist of the day on the play as well.
Jakkie Greer (Aurora, Colo./Grandview H.S.) was taken down in the box by a Mountain Lion defender in the 85th minute, resulting in a penalty kick.
Rachael Michaels (Colorado Springs, Colo./Colorado Springs Christian School) converted the attempt for the Roadrunners for her first career goal.

Alee Seehausen (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View H.S.) played the final 14:33 and made three saves.
The Roadrunners had a 32-4 shot advantage in the game, including 19-3 in the second half. It was their second straight game with over 30 shot attempts and just the second all season. Metro State has outshot its opponent in each of its 20 games this season.
Metro State will host the RMAC Tournament next weekend at Auraria Field. Metro State will face the winner of Regis and Mesa State in the semifinals at noon on Friday. Regis will host Mesa State on Wednesday. The championship game will be at noon on Sunday, Oct. 8, at Auraria Field.
