DENVER, Colo. - The No. 4 Metro State women's soccer team's season came to an end following a 4-3 shootout loss to No. 21 Colorado Mines after remaining scoreless after two overtime periods on Friday at the NCAA Central Region Championship in Denver. The Roadrunners finished the year 21-1-2 overall as the game officially resulted in a tie, while the Orediggers will advance to the NCAA quarterfinals with a record of 19-4-1.
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.)' opening penalty kick in the shootout was stopped as CSM goalkeeper Briana Schulze made a diving save to deflect the kick off the right post and out of the net. Kayla Mitchell put the Orediggers ahead as she scored on her team's first attempt.
Caitlin Oliver (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) evened the score for Metro State and it remained tied 1-1 after two kicks for each team as Caitlyn Ruegger missed for CSM.
Courtney Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado H.S.) scored for Metro State and Kelsey Lang did as well for Mines to make the score 2-2 after the third round.
Ashley Nemmers (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) had her shot stopped by Schulze and the Orediggers went ahead 3-2 on Jessica Stark's goal.
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) came through for the Roadrunners to keep the shootout alive as she scored on Metro State's fifth attempt. Megan Woodworth had a chance to win the shootout for CSM, but she missed high off the crossbar to send the shootout to a sixth round tied at 3-3.
Schulze came up big with her third save in the shootout period as she stopped
Kathryn Gosztyla (Orangevale, Calif./Trabuco Hills H.S.)'s attempt and Danielle Hering finally ended the game by connecting for the Orediggers.
Metro State had plenty of chances to break the scoreless tie in regulation and in the overtime periods as it had 22 shot attempts, including 12 on goal. CSM had just seven shot attempts in the game and goalkeeper
Becca Maloney (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) stopped all three shots on goal.
Schulze made 11 saves for Mines, not including her three stops in the shootout.
Mays had a header miss inches right of the net five minutes into the contest after Schulze was unable to control
Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.)' shot on goal from the close left wing as Metro State came up short on a pair of scoring chances early.
Gabby Klipp (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.)'s header missed left off Ryan's corner kick from the right side at the 10-minute mark.
Schulze made another stop on a shot by McQuilliams from the top of the box in the 28th minute. Ryan missed to the right on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 34th minute.
CSM finally put its first shot on goal 11 minutes into the second half on Stefanie Frelinger's deep shot from the right wing.
McQuilliams nearly had a goal in the 61st minute as her shot was not controlled by Schulze and Stark had to knock the ball away before it crossed the goal line. Klipp had a header stopped by Schulze less than a minute later and her header in the 70th minute grazed the top of the crossbar and landed on top of the net.
McQuilliams and Renko each had shots on goal over the next five minutes and Mays missed just right of the net on a header in the 80th minute.
Schulze again made a save when
Ashley Munchiando (Arvada, Colo./Mullen H.S.) drove in from the left wing and shot from close in the 86th minute.
Scoring chances were few for both teams in the first overtime, though CSM had two deep shots miss the net and Munchiando missed right from the close right wing.
Metro State thought it won the game less than two minutes into the second overtime. Mays tried to head a ball past Schulze and the two collided as they reached the ball simultaneously. Ryan put the loose ball into the net, but the referee waved off the goal and instead called a foul on Mays.
Each team had a long shot on goal late in the period, but Schulze and Maloney made both saves with ease to force the shootout.
Metro State will say goodbye to five seniors as
Carrie Aversano (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek H.S.), Gosztyla, Maloney, Mays and Thomas will finished their collegiate careers on Friday.
Maloney finished up her career as the most decorated goalkeeper in school history as she holds the career records for save percentage and goals against average and finished third in wins and shutouts.
Mays graduates second all-time in Metro State history with 170 points, 71 goals and 23 game-winning goals and fourth with 28 assists. Thomas ranks eighth with 74 points and 29 goals.
