Postgame Interview with Annie Austin

DENVER, Colo. -
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) scored the first three goals of the game and Metro State's women's soccer team never looked back as it cruised to a 6-1 win over No. 20 Colorado Mines on Friday afternoon at Auraria Field.  It was the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams and Metro State improved to 4-1-0 overall, while CSM dropped to 4-1-0.

Mays first found the net in the 27th minute in what was a defensive battle in the first half.  Mays found the net from five yards in front of the net after Courtney Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado H.S.) and Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) passed the ball back-and-forth in the box moments after Ryan had a shot blocked.

Metro State goalkeeper Becca Maloney (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) made a diving save, one of five saves in the first half, two minutes later following a shot off a corner kick from Mines to keep the Roadrunners in front.

The score remained 1-0 into halftime, but Mays scored just eight minutes into the second half again after she beat a defender on the right side of the net following a crossing pass from McQuilliams.

Mays scored her third goal just two minutes later in the 55th minute as she got loose on a breakaway from the left side.  She nearly added a fourth goal in the 58th minute as she was by herself in front of the net, but she was tackled from behind just six yards from the net before she could take a shot attempt and Mines defender Kelsey Lang was assessed a red card for the foul.  McQuilliams took the penalty kick and put it past Briana Schulze to give Metro State a 4-1 lead.

The scoring flurry continued as Colorado Mines scored the fourth goal in a span of just six minutes as Maloney was unable to control a cross and Kayla Mitchell put the loose ball into the net.

Aleah DeGeneres (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) had two excellent chances in the 67th and 69th minutes.  Mays set her up for the first chance with a long pass, putting her 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, but Schulze made a save.  After a counter-attack from Mines that resulted in two saves by Maloney, including a spectacular diving stop, DeGeneres' header off a pass from Gabby Klipp (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) was also stopped by Schulze.

Caitlin Oliver (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) had a shot from 10 yards out in the 72nd minute, but missed just right of the net.

The scoring offense slowed for both teams until freshman Annie Austin (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.), playing the first game of her career, found the net in the 87th minute after a pass from Ashley Munchiando (Arvada, Colo./Mullen H.S.).  Austin took the shot from directly in front of the net, 20 yards away after dribbling for a few yards.

Austin added another goal in the 89th minute after dribbling across the front and shooting off-balance as she was going to her right from 10 yards out.  Munchiando once again added the assist.

Mays' hat trick was just the second of her career.  Her first career three-goal game came on Oct. 3, 2008, against Adams State.  The 2008 third team All-America forward and 2009 RMAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year attempted just four shots on Friday, making good use of her attempts.

Kylee Hanavan was the last Metro State player to score more than one goal in her first career game at Metro State, netting three against Nebraska-Omaha on Aug. 27, 2004.  However, Hanavan was a sophomore when she achieved the feat.  The last freshman to score multiple goals in her first career game was Jodi McGann on Aug. 31, 2002, against Montana State-Billings.

Maloney made a season-high seven saves on Friday.  Metro State outshot Colorado Mines 21-9, including 12-8 on goal.

The Roadrunners travel to Colorado State-Pueblo on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
