DENVER, Colo. - Metro State got two strong pitching performances on Saturday as it split a doubleheader with Dickinson State (N.D.), falling 2-1 in game one, before rebounding with a 7-2 victory in game two in Denver. The Roadrunners are now 3-3 on the season, while DSU is 1-1.
Game One
Ted Jamison (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) fired his fourth career complete game, but Metro State's offense fizzled in the 2-1 loss. Jamison allowed just three hits in seven innings and struck out six.
The Roadrunners could not find a timely hit as they left nine runners on base.
After a quick 1-2-3 first inning, Jamison labored in the second, walking the first two batters. After a strikeout and a pickoff, Nolan Bracken hit a single up the middle to score the game's first run and Kevin Park followed with an RBI double to left-center to put the Blue Hawks up 2-0.
Metro State scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning when
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) scored on a fielding error by the shortstop that would have ended the inning. But that was the game's final run as Jamison allowed just one hit in the final five innings. The Roadrunners stranded
Everett Altman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) in the fifth inning after his leadoff double and also left a runner in scoring position in the sixth.
Dickinson State starter Julian Ramirez went six innings and struck out three for the win. Bronson Collins picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.
Game Two
The Roadrunners got off to a slow start again as starter
Tony Weber (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth H.S.) put three runners on in the first, but escaped with just a 1-0 deficit. DSU added to its lead after Willie Sandez's leadoff double in the second, taking a 2-0 lead.
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) got the Roadrunners on the board in the bottom of the second when he lined a one-out solo home run over the right field fence.
The Blue Hawks unraveled defensively in the fourth and Metro State took advantage.
Nick Columbia (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood H.S.) led off with a single to left-center and advanced to second on a balk and to third on a stolen base. After two outs,
Kevin Coughlin (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) walked, before
Marcel Dominguez (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad H.S.) reached on a fielding error by DSU's third baseman, allowing Columbia to tie the game.
Brett Bowman (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rampart H.S.) followed with a two-run single to as Metro State took a 4-2 lead.
The DSU errors continued to mount in the fifth as two more defensive miscues led to three more runs.
Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.) had an RBI double down the left field line, while Brown added an RBI single and Coughlin hit his first career triple into the right field corner to score Brown for the key hits in the inning.
Weber finished three innings on the mound and struck out two.
Sean Walter (Wiggins, Colo./Wiggins H.S.) earned the win in relief, tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just two hits.
The two teams were scheduled to play again on Sunday, but that doubleheader has been moved to Monday due to expected cold temperatures and flurries in Denver on Sunday. Monday's game will begin at 11 a.m.
