GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Metro State hit a pair of three-run home runs in the final two innings to push them to a come-from-behind victory in game two as the Roadrunners split a doubleheader with No. 7 Mesa State, falling 11-3 in game one, before winning 11-9 in game two. Metro State is now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mesa State is 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the RMAC.

Jake Draeger (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) was nearly flawless for over four innings, allowing one run in the third inning, but the host Mavericks got to him in the fifth for four runs, chasing him from the game with two outs in the inning. They scored four more in the sixth off reliever
Tyler Hensen (Lakewood, Colo./Bishop Machebeuf H.S.), though just one run was earned due to a key two-out error.
The Roadrunners finally got on the board in the seventh inning, scoring twice as
Marcel Dominguez (Carlsbad, N.M./Carlsbad H.S.) and
Tommy Frikken (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) each delivered RBI singles. They added another in the eighth after Mesa State scored twice in the seventh on a base hit by
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.) that scored
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.).
Fox and
Chris Redding (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) each had two hits to lead the offense.
Game Two (7-inning game)
Metro State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) scored on a single up the middle by
Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.).
After the Mavericks tied the game in the bottom of the second, Fox belted a two-run home run to right field, scoring Redding, who led off the inning with an infield hit.
The Roadrunners led 4-1 after the top of the fourth after an RBI double by
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) to right field.
Mesa State got its bats going in the bottom of the fourth, scoring twice. The Mavericks added three more in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
The Mavericks went to their bullpen in the sixth and Metro State took advantage.
Cody Henry (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) and Lopez led off the inning with consecutive singles and
Tommy Frikken (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) reached on a sacrifice bunt as the Mavericks failed to record an out on the play to load the bases. After Redding grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Henry, Coffey delivered a three-run home run to put Metro State in front 8-6. Fox and Stouffer followed Coffey with consecutive singles, but a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the threat.
Mesa State came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game at 8-8.
Tony Weber (Elizabeth, Colo./Elizabeth H.S.) entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs after the first two runs scored, but escaped the jam with a pop out to third base.
Lopez reached on his third base hit of the game with one out in the top of the seventh and moved to second when pinch hitter
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) walked. Redding delivered one of his biggest hits of his Metro State career, as he greeted reliever Jack Amidei with a three-run home run to put the Roadrunners ahead 11-8.
Preseason All-America left fielder Kevin Becker led off the bottom of the seventh reaching on an error by third baseman Trimble. Becker advanced to second on a ground out by No. 3 hitter Lucas Shaw. An error by shortstop Frikken allowed Brett Nigbur to reach base and scored Becker from second to make the score 11-9. The Roadrunners went to the bullpen to lefthander
Sean Walter (Wiggins, Colo./Wiggins H.S.), who walked pinch hitter Jeff Popick. Nigbur and Popick both moved to scoring position with one out on a wild pitch, but Walter got a fly out down the right field line and a called strike three to end the game.
Lopez led Metro State with three hits and Redding, Coffey, Fox and Stouffer each had two. Weber earned his second career win and Walter picked up his second career save in relief.
The two teams will play a non-conference game on Sunday beginning at noon in Grand Junction.
