DENVER - No. 13 Metro State was upset 3-0 by Colorado Mesa at home on Friday, snapping a 12-game home winning streak. The loss was also Metro State's first to the Mavericks since 2001 as Metro State's 14-game winning streak against CMU was ended.
The Roadrunners dropped to 9-2-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mavericks improved to 6-4-2 and 5-1-2.
It was a tale of two halfs for the Roadrunners, who controlled play for much of the first half, but could not find the net. Metro State outshot CMU 7-1 in the first half, but only 10-9 in the second half. However, eight of CMU's nine shots in the second half were on goal, compared to just two for the Roadrunners.
Metro State had two good scoring chances in the first four minutes, but
Hayley Marsh (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.)'s header two minutes in and
Aubrey Fondy (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.)'s shot from inside the box were both stopped by Sarah Schnetzler, the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Schnetzler seemed to be in the right position all day, making seven saves in the win.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead 8:22 into the second half as Daniela Salinas scored her third goal of the season, floating a one-touch cross from Kaitlynn Holt over
Danielle Quigley (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.)'s head.
The Roadrunners failed on a counter attack just four minutes later.
Tess Hagenlock (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) had a wide open breakaway, but could not control the pass from Fondy and the scoring chance resulted in a weak shot that floated high from the top of the box.
The Mavericks stretched the lead to 2-0 at 75:12 with a high cross shot from the far left wing by Darion Wiegert, again beating Quigley high.
Quigley made a spectacular one-handed diving save on Kelci Crispe's shot in the 84th minute, but CMU added another goal a minute later by Kelly Parkhurst, scoring on a rebound off a deflection by a Metro State defender.
Quigley made six saves in the game.
Metro State will host No. 9 Fort Lewis at noon on Sunday.
