GOLDEN, Colo. – Metro State swept Colorado Mines on the road on Saturday, winning 9-7 and 9-6 in Golden, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM fell to 2-13 and 0-7.
Game One
Metro State jumped out to the early lead and its bullpen held off Colorado Mines in the 9-7 victory.
The Roadrunners scored twice in the top of the first using three straight singles by
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.),
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) and
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.).
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) was roughed up for all seven runs in just 3.2 innings, allowing 14 base runners, including five hit batters.
Mines tied the game with two in the second. The Roadrunners took the lead back with three in the fourth as the first four batters reached.
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) and
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) singled to start the inning and
Jake Danneffel (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) delivered an RBI double to down the left field line. After a walk to
Everett Altman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.),
Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly and
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) hit a run-scoring single to center.
The Orediggers scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-5 lead.
The Roadrunners scored four in the top of the fifth, two with the aid of a two-out error. Kaplan, Danneffel and Altman hit three straight singles and Lopez hit another sacrifice fly in the inning.
Kyle Orgill (Aurora, Colo./Grandview H.S.), who relieved Perry in the fourth, threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Nate Van Bibber (Littleton, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) escaped a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh for his second save of the season.
Kaplan and Danneffel each had two hits.
Game Two
The Roadrunners fought back from a 4-0 deficit after two innings with seven in the top of the third inning. Krueger, Claus and Nickels all delivered two-run singles in the inning and Coffey ripped an RBI double to help take the lead as Metro State sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning.
Mines got one back in the bottom of the inning, but Metro State came out with two more in the top of the fourth as Krueger and Lopez both scored on a two-run single by Fox.
The Orediggers got an unearned run in the fifth, but
Alex Hill (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) and
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) pitched scoreless innings of relief in the sixth and seventh to close the game.
Corey Collins (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) earned the win, allowing five earned runs in five innings.
The two teams will play a nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.
