LAKEWOOD, Colo. - The Metro State baseball team swept Colorado Christian on Saturday, winning 6-3 and 16-5 to complete a four-game sweep over the Cougars at All-Star Park in Lakewood. The Roadrunners improved to 13-7 overall and 10-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 3-19 and 0-15. It was Metro State's eighth win in its past 10 games.
Game One
The Roadrunners used a strong pitching performance by
Corey Collins (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and two relievers in the 6-3 victory. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run double by
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) with nobody out, scoring
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) and
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.).
Metro State scored another in the third on a sacrifice fly by
Jake Danneffel (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) and one in the fourth on a base hit by Krueger to lead 4-0. The Roadrunners also added single runs in the fifth on a triple by
Ty Hancock (Winslow, Ariz./Winslow H.S.) and in the sixth on a base hit by
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.).
CCU pushed two across in the bottom of the fourth and added one in the fifth, but that was it against Collins and the bullpen. Collins allowed three runs in six innings to improve to 3-2 this season.
Alex Hill (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) pitched two scoreless innings and escaped runners on the corners with one out in the seventh with two straight strikeouts.
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save this season.
Offensively, Kaplan, Stouffer and Coffey each had two hits to lead the way.
Game Two
CCU actually controlled the game for the first four innings. The Cougars scored twice in the bottom of the first. Metro State answered with one in the top of the second after a leadoff single by
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) and a ground out by
Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) to score him.
The Roadrunners stranded runners in scoring position in the second and fourth, squandering chances to tie the game.
But they took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring three times. Jacobs doubled to start the inning and scored on a base hit by Krueger to tie the game. Krueger came home on a bases-loaded walk with two outs to
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) and Stouffer scored the go-ahead run on a walk to
Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.).
Metro State scored three more times in the sixth.
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly, Fox delivered an RBI single and Claus ripped a double down the left field line to score Fox.
CCU scored two in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run, but the Roadrunners broke the game open with nine in the top of the seventh. Brown had a key two-run double and Jacobs, Nickels and Krueger each had RBI singles.
Zach Cleveland (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) earned the win, allowing two runs in five innings, while striking out five.
Krueger and Jacobs each had three of the team's 13 hits and Fox and Claus each had two.
Metro State will play at Colorado State-Pueblo on Tuesday in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
