LAS VEGAS, N.M. - It was the
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) show all afternoon as the righthander fired his fourth complete game of the season to lead Metro State to a 2-1 victory at New Mexico Highlands on Friday. It was also Perry's third consecutive complete game, but his first in a nine-inning game.
Metro State improved to 17-8 overall and 13-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while NMHU fell to 15-14 and 9-11.
Perry moved into the No. 1 spot in Metro State's rotation this weekend after an injury to
Jake Draeger (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.) last weekend. His gem on Friday last just one hour and 50 minutes, the shortest nine-inning game for Metro State since 2002.
Perry struck out the first Highlands batter of the game, setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. He allowed one hit through seven innings, a two-out ground ball single through the left side in the second inning.
The Cowboys finally got to him after a leadoff single in the eighth inning led to a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 2-1.
Metro State had jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the third inning.
Ty Hancock (Winslow, Ariz./Winslow H.S.) led off with a base hit through the left side and scored on a one-out single to right by
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.).
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) scored one batter later on a single to center by
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.).
The Roadrunners stranded a leadoff double by
Jake Danneffel (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) in the seventh, a leadoff walk to Kaplan in the eighth and a leadoff double by
Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) in the ninth. Coffey also advanced to third with nobody out on a throw.
Clay Mohr singled to start the bottom of the ninth for the Cowboys, but Perry induced a 5-4-3 double play to erase the baserunner. He got the final out on a foul out to the catcher Danneffel.
Perry's final line was nine innings pitched, four hits allowed, three strikeouts and most importantly, no walks allowed.
It was the first nine-inning complete game in over a year for Metro State pitchers and the first of Perry's career.
Both teams will play two seven-inning games on Saturday starting at noon in Las Vegas, N.M.
