Dramatic Comeback Leads Baseball to Fifth Straight Win

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - Metro State scored six runs in the top of the seventh to rally for an 11-8 victory in game two after winning game one 18-8 at New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.  The Roadrunners improved to 19-8 overall and 15-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while NMHU fell to 15-16 and 9-13.

Game One
The Roadrunners put up crooked numbers in each of the first five innings and had 17 hits in the 18-8 victory.

Ty Hancock (Winslow, Ariz./Winslow H.S.) was 3-for-3 with a double.  Five players had two hits each, including David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.), Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.), Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.), Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) and Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.).  Kaplan drove in four runs as well and David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.), Claus and Jacobs each drove in three.  Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) was just 1-for-2, but walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice to score five runs.

Zach Cleveland (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) was roughed up for eight runs in four innings, but still earned the win.  Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) and Joey Widhalm (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) combined for three shutout innings of relief, allowing just one baserunner.

The Roadrunners scored two runs in the first, three in the second and four in the third to take a 9-3 lead.  The broke the game open with six in the fourth, though Highlands answered with five in the bottom of the inning.  Metro State added two more in the fifth and one in the seventh.

Fox, Stouffer, Claus and Coffey had four straight two-out singles in the fourth to cap the big inning.  Kaplan had a two-run single in the second and a two-run double in the fifth.

Game Two
Metro State twice rallied from three-run deficits to finish the dramatic comeback victory.

The Roadrunners trailed 3-0 after the second inning before scoring four in the top of the third, highlighted by a two-run double to center by Fox.

The Cowboys scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth and each team scored one in the sixth as NMHU led 8-5 after six innings.

Krueger blasted a three-run home run to right field with one out in the seventh to tie the game.  With two outs, Fox singled through the right side and scored on a double by Stouffer for a 9-8 lead.  Claus then ripped a double down the left field line to score Stouffer and Claus came home on a base hit by Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) to finish the six-run inning.

Jacobs pitched a perfect seventh inning for his team-leading fourth save.  Alex Hill (Casper, Wyo./Kelly Walsh H.S.) earned the win with a scoreless sixth inning in relief.

Fox was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead the offense.  Stouffer and Jake Danneffel (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) each had two hits.

The teams will play the series finale, a nine-inning game, at noon on Sunday.
