PUEBLO, Colo. – Metro State dropped two games at Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday, falling 8-5 and 11-7, but remained in first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Mountain Division as Mesa State dropped a pair to Colorado Mines. The Roadrunners fell to 28-14 overall and 24-13 in the RMAC, while CSUP improved to 26-22 and 21-17.
Game One
Friday's afternoon matchup began as a pitcher's duel for four innings before Metro State finally pushed across a run in the fifth to take a lead on
Eric Lopez (Hayden, Ariz./Hayden H.S.)'s double to right.
The Roadrunners blew the game open in the sixth with three more runs.
David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) led off with a home run to center.
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) ripped an RBI double to right and scored on
Jacob Trimble (Danville, Ill./Schlarman H.S.)'s sacrifice fly.
CSUP came right back and scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 6-4. The ThunderWolves took advantage of a key error, scoring three unearned runs.
The ThunderWolves added another in the seventh.
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) belted a home run to left to lead off the eighth but that was Metro State's final run.
Bradshaw Perry (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Fox and
Jake Danneffel (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) led the offense with two hits each.
Game Two
Metro State again got off to a strong start, leading 5-0 after an inning and a half.
Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) led off with a double and scored on a single by Fox in the first.
David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) drilled an RBI double to score
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.) and
Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) crushed a three-run home run in the second.
But the ThunderWolves answered with seven runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-5 lead.
Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) hit a pinch hit RBI single in the fifth, scoring Claus.
Robbie Nickels (Phoenix, Ariz./Horizon H.S.) tied the game on the same play, scoring when Brown was caught in a rundown between first and second.
CSUP took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning with one run and scored three in the sixth for the final margin.
Krueger led the offense with two of the team's nine hits.
Patrick Gojan (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista H.S.) took the loss in relief of
Jake Draeger (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis H.S.), allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings.
The two teams will play two more on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
