Van Bibber's Courageous Outing Leads Baseball to Split on the Road

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. -
Metro State righthander Nate Van Bibber (Littleton, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) earned the win in game two as the visiting Roadrunners earned a split at Colorado State-Pueblo, falling 7-4 and winning 10-6 in eight innings in game two.  Van Bibber, who tragically lost his father and brother in a car accident Wednesday night, elected to take his turn in the rotation on Saturday despite the circumstances.

Metro State wrapped up the regular season with a 29-15 overall record and 25-14 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  CSUP is 27-23 and 22-18.  The Roadrunners finished second in the Mountain Division and will face CSU-Pueblo at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the first round of the RMAC Tournament in Grand Junction.  Metro State's No. 3 seed is the highest since being the No. 2 seed in 2008.

Game One
The ThunderWolves built a 5-0 lead after three innings and held on in the 7-4 victory.  Metro State scored two in the fourth on Jake Danneffel (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.)'s two-run shot to left with nobody out.  The Roadrunners added one in the seventh after back-to-back doubles by Jordan Stouffer (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) and Brennan Brown (Thornton, Colo./Legacy H.S.) and one in the ninth after a leadoff double by Stouffer and an RBI single by Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.).

Stouffer and Claus each had three hits to lead the Roadrunners.  Corey Collins (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in 5 2/3 innings.  Zach Cleveland (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) allowed one unearned run in 2 1/3 innings of relief and struck out four.

Game Two
The Roadrunners exploded for five runs in the top of the first.  Zach Krueger (Holyoke, Colo./Holyoke H.S.) led off with a home run to left.  Stouffer drove in David Kaplan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) with a ground out to short for the first out.  Claus singled home David Fox (Lakewood, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.), who doubled earlier in the inning.  Mike Coffey (Highlands Ranch, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) kept things going with an infield hit that scored Claus and Sean Reeves (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley H.S.) capped the inning with an RBI double to left-center.

Metro State's bats then went cold and CSUP built a 6-5 lead going into the seventh.  Fox came through with a game-tying single to score Krueger and send the game to extra innings.

With Van Bibber cruising as he set down seven in a row heading into the eighth, the bats heated up again as Metro State scored four in the top of the eighth to win the game.  Reeves led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an infield hit by Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.).  After two outs, Fox loaded the bases with another infield hit.  Stouffer finally delivered a two-run single.  Brown poured on more with a two-run double to put the game out of reach.

Van Bibber allowed just a one-out single and struck out the final two batters of the game.  He allowed six runs in eight innings and struck out five.  He also allowed just eight hits.

Krueger and Fox each had three hits.
