Women's soccer: MSU's season ends at regional championship

Box Score DENVER - 15th-ranked Colorado School of Mines held off Metro State 2-1 on Friday at Auraria Field to win the South Central Region championship. CSM (18-4-1 overall) advances to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, where it will face the West Region champion at noon at Auraria Field on Sunday. The Roadrunners fell to 15-6-2 as their season came to an end.

Anna Evans put the Orediggers up 1-0 at 38:24, scoring a hard-driven shot from the top of the box into the left side of the goal.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, MSU came out strong early in the second half, outshooting CSM 4-0 in the first 10 minutes. But Evans connected with Megan Woodworth at 65:03, giving Woodworth an open shot from the top of the box and she scored for a 2-0 Orediggers lead.

That score remained until just 2:15 left in the game when a foul on CSM inside the box led to a penalty kick goal for Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) as the Roadrunners cut their deficit to 2-1.

But Mines held on in the final two minutes, with goalkeeper Jalyn Yates making a save on a long shot from Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.), one of Yates' five saves in the game.

For the game, MSU outshot Mines 16-11. Jordan Simkins (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.), one of five seniors for Metro State, made two saves in goal. The Roadrunners say goodbye to four other seniors, including Kelci Newlin (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.), Hayley Renko (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.), Aubrey Fondy (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) and Allyn Parrino (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport H.S.).
