Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - Metro State stretched a one-goal halftime lead to a 4-1 win over West Texas A&M in women's soccer on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Austin, Texas. The Roadrunners, who improved to 14-5-2 overall, will face No. 18 St. Edward's (Texas) at 2 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday in the South Central region semifinals. WTAMU fell to 13-7-1 with the loss.
Freshman
Noemy Polanco (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood H.S.) scored her first career goal for the game's first goal at 38:15.
Brandi Farley (Colorado Springs/Pine Creek H.S.) ripped a cross from the right corner to the far side of the box, leaving Polanco with a wide open shot for the score.
Leading 1-0 at halftime,
Kelci Newlin (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa H.S.) scored her first goal of the season nearly 12 minutes into the second half off a corner kick.
Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.)'s corner from the right side was headed by
Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) to the center of the box for Newlin's shot.
Rolph piled on another goal less than three minutes later after
Maggie Rojas (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) played a ball through a defender to Rolph, who ran ahead of the defense. Rolph's shot came from the top of the box over a charging goalkeeper, giving MSU the 3-0 lead.
The Lady Buffs scored on one of their two shots on goal at 75:29. Becky Peth shot from 25 yards out on the left wing as the ball bounced off the far post and into the net.
MSU got back its three-goal advantage nine minutes later when
Aubrey Fondy (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) scored on a wide open shot from the right side in the box after a cross from
Shursteen Sharpe (Westminster, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.).
WTAMU had three good scoring chances in the first half on counterattacks as the Roadrunners dominated the rest of play. The first scrum was cleared off the line by a Metro State defender eight minutes into the game. In the 23rd minute,
Jordan Simkins (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) made a diving save on a screened shot from the top of the box. Just two minutes before Polanco's first goal, Leslie Briggs had a shot hit off the post.
Simkins made one save for MSU, which outshot the Lady Buffs 19-7.
Metro State's four goals tied a school record for most goals in an NCAA tournament game, set on Nov. 14, 2003 against Central Oklahoma.
