DENVER - Metro State recovered from a 12-inning loss on Friday to split a doubleheader at Regis University on Saturday, falling 3-1 in game one before a 4-3 victory in game two. The Roadrunners are now 9-16 overall and 6-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis is 13-15 and 8-12.
Game One
Evan Claus (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) belted his first home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as Mike McElreath held Metro to six hits and struck out eight in the seven-inning game for the Rangers.
Claus's home run tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth, but Regis rallied for two runs in the sixth to send starter
Nick Hammett (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) to the showers after allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings. Hammett allowed just four hits, but also gave up six walks.
After going 5-for-5 with four extra-base hits on Friday,
Darryl Baca (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) cooled with an 0-for-3 performance at the plate, drawing a walk in the first inning.
Metro left nine runners on base, including the bases loaded in the sixth.
Game Two
The Rangers opened the bottom of the first with three straight hits, including a leadoff triple. But starter
Mike Thill (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) calmed down and limited Regis to one run over his final 4 2/3 after surrendering two in the first. The freshman struck out a season-high seven batters.
The Roadrunners tied the game in the third when Baca ripped a two-run single to left, scoring
Jeff Levett (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and
Ty Jacobs (Denver/Cherokee Trail H.S.).
A leadoff single by
Daron Schulthies (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) in the sixth, followed by an RBI double by
Alex Schrupp (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) handed Metro its first lead of the day.
But Regis came back with a run on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the inning, tying the game as the Roadrunners brought in Jacobs out of the bullpen. The senior stranded both runners he inherited.
Baca connected on his third hit of the game, a double with one out in the seventh. As Regis turned to its bullpen,
Erik Cammall (San Diego, Calif./St. Augustine H.S.) delivered a single to left and Baca came home on an error as the left fielder misplayed the ball for a 4-3 Metro lead.
Jacobs earned the win, allowing a one-out walk, and striking out the final two batters of the seventh to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Metro will play a nine-inning game at Regis on Sunday beginning at noon.
