On This Date (March 25, 2000): MSU Denver Wins 1st National Championship

Anzures scores 32 in title game win against Kentucky Wesleyan

DENVER – It was 20 years ago today that MSU Denver celebrated its first national championship, an easy 97-79 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan to gain revenge for falling to the same team in the championship game one season earlier.

That game highlights our latest installment of "On This Date in Roadrunners History," which looks back at the biggest accomplishments in MSU Denver athletics on that particular calendar day.

On This Date, March 25:

2000 – DeMarcos Anzures scored 32 points, making 10 of 16 from the field, 5 of 10 from 3-point range and all seven of his free throws, as the Roadrunners blew past Kentucky Wesleyan in the championship game, 97-79, for the program's first championship. Kane Oakley added 21 points and eight rebounds, while Lee Barlow scored 17 and guard John Bynum had 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting while grabbing seven boards. The Roadrunners shot 61.5 percent from the field (16 of 26) in the first half while taking a 50-30 lead, and finished at 60.4 percent for the game. Kentucky Wesleyan got within 84-74 with 4:23 left, but Bynum scored four points in an 8-0 run that secured the victory. Anzures was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Elite Eight, while Barlow, Bynum and Oakley also made the all-tournament team. MSU Denver finished the season 33-4.

"Three or four times this year we came out like we did tonight," MSU Denver coach Mike Dunlap said after the game. "We hit a lot of shots and we played with them on the boards and handled their pressure. We exposed their transition defense with our 3s and we took their crowd out of the game."
