DENVER – Everybody is back in action this weekend.
The 21
st-ranked MSU Denver baseball team is back after having a scheduled off week last week. Regis is back in action playing a team other than No. 1 Colorado Mesa for the first time in over a month.
And MSU Denver two-way star
Logan Soole is expected to return, too, after a long layoff.
Regis comes to the Assembly Athletic Complex for a four-game series scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Friday. The teams are set to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and then play the series finale Sunday at noon.
Soole is expected to be the starting pitcher in the opener in what would be his first game since April 9.
"It'll be good to have him back out there," MSU Denver coach
Ryan Strain said. "It seems like it's been forever. He just hasn't been able to play a ton for us, unfortunately, especially on the offensive side."
On the mound, MSU Denver's all-time leader in career ERA is 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA this season while making five starts. At the plate, one of the RMAC's most devastating hitters is batting .378 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 12 games.
The Roadrunners are 12-1 in games Soole has started either on the mound or in the lineup. They are 14-3 when he has played in some capacity – losing twice when he appeared as a pinch-hitter.
And yet, despite playing nearly half the season without its most accomplished player, the Roadrunners are 25-7 overall and are a solid second in the RMAC at 21-7.
"That's the crazy part about it," Strain said. "As well as we've played for the majority of the year – and we've had some blips where we didn't play well –the fact is he hasn't played hardly at all. If you put him in there, on the mound or at the plate, it's a pretty big deal.
"When you've played this well and one of your best players hasn't played very much, it's just a testament to how well our other guys have done. They've played well, they've worked hard, and they're good players. They've continued to move on with a 'Next guy up' mentality."
The Roadrunners are hoping to come back sharp after having last week off. If nothing else, they'll be fresher and healthier.
"I never like having a week off, but it came at a good time," Strain said. "The last few weeks, we've been banged up in some areas. The biggest thing is that it gave our pitching staff a chance to take a break, regroup and hopefully they'll be able to be full steam ahead for these next few weeks heading into the conference tournament.
"Same thing on the offensive side. We had some guys get banged up and they needed a break. Hopefully it gave us some time. If you have to have a bye week, this was probably the best time to have it."
Regis (16-8, 12-8) has had what amounts to nearly a bye month. And timing hasn't been good for the Rangers, who were flying high at 16-3 before being able to play only national No. 1 Colorado Mesa over the last four weeks.
Regis is 16-2 against all teams other than Mesa.
"They were playing really well, and then unfortunately they had a pause," Strain said. "Now they're trying to play a lot of games in not too many days moving forward. But they've done a nice job. They compete at the plate – they put balls in play and make you make plays. And their pitching staff is throwing the ball really well. It's going to be a good challenge. As you look at the season and what is coming up, this is obviously a weekend where we need to play well."
