GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – MSU Denver had a small contingent competing Friday on the opening day of the Maverick Classic, but the Roadrunners made some noise.
Jocelyn Korbe set the program record in the women's javelin, while
Abi Read and
Anna Swanson both raced into the top five in program history in the 10,000 meters.
Korbe broke the record set just last week by teammate
Teagan Garand with a throw of 30.10 meters (98 feet, 9 inches) to finish in fifth place. Garand, who had a 29.75-meter effort last week, finished eighth at 27.49 (90-2), and
Riley Negrey was ninth at 26.26 (86-2).
Meanwhile, Read finished fifth in the 10,000 in 38 minutes, 17.44 seconds – only Kylee Schuler, Victoria Alcala and Xenia Flores have posted better times in the event for MSU Denver, and Alcala was the most recent, in 2015.
Swanson, who had been fifth on MSU Denver's individual list prior to Friday, jumped Julia Hernandez but remained fifth behind Read while improving her personal best by 41 seconds, to 38:42.21, while placing sixth.
For the men,
Brant Killmon, turned in the third-best outdoor long jump of his career with a second-place effort of 6.97 meters (22 feet, 10 ½ inches). Killmon is MSU Denver's second-best competitor in program history in that event.
The bulk of the meet is Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
