@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners' Season Ends with 3-2 Loss at No. 18 Mesa

MSU Denver fights to the finish after falling behind

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – MSU Denver fought to the finish but saw its women's soccer season come to a close Sunday with a 3-2 loss at 18th-ranked Colorado Mesa in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.

Colorado Mesa took a 3-0 lead at 50:04, but the Roadrunners bounced right back with a goal at 53:22 by Isa Durkin. The Roadrunners continued to push the pace the rest of the way and finally broke through as Kailey Maness scored with 21 seconds to go. But the Roadrunners were unable to mount another threat.

"I thought we gave up some soft goals, and I was disappointed in that, but I'm really proud of our fight," MSU Denver coach Kat Mertz said. "Our players showed a lot of courage in that last 30 minutes to keep battling and keep fighting. That's a positive we can take forward into next year.

"We fell short of our goals this year, but we have some extra motivation for next year."

MSU Denver, the tournament's fifth seed, finished the season at 7-6-6.

With a goal and an assist, Maness finished the season with three goals and seven assists and wrapped up her career with nine goals and 12 assists.

"We usually sub out our front runners, but during the second half we said let's just keep her in there and let her play her heart out, and she absolutely did that," Mertz said. "She fought all the way to her last-second goal. She's a competitor through and through, and hopefully she showed our young freshman group of frontrunners how to compete your heart out out there."

Maness' goal came as Sami Spring sent a service into the box that Tessa Killmon flicked on with a behind-the-back touch. Maness' shot came from just above the goal line to the right of the goal.

The goal by Durkin was her first of the season and was set up by a cross from Maness.

Besides Maness, defender Dani Nelson also played her final game.

"Dani cares an unbelievable amount about this team, the program's success and her teammates," Mertz said. "She would do anything for her teammates, and that's evident in how she competes on the field.

"We're sad to see Kailey and Dani leave."
