COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Naleia Sowell became the second-fastest runner in the indoor women's 400 meters in program history while winning that event on Friday to lead MSU Denver at the opening day of the UCCS Pre-Holiday Invitational & Multi.
Sowell won the 400 in 58.62 seconds, with teammate
Allyssa Romero placing second in 58.83. Only Romero (four times) has run a faster 400 indoors for the Roadrunners. Sowell's previous best indoors had been 1:00.79.
Earlier, in the pentathlon,
Jocelyn Korbe tied her own indoor program record in the high jump as part of a 16
th-place finish. Korbe cleared 1.47 meters (4 feet, 9 ¾ inches) in the high jump.
And
Grace Solarin topped her school record by more than four feet while placing fourth in the weight throw with an effort of 15.36 (50-4 1/2). Newcomer
Lushous Davis, the Roadrunners' second-ever competitor in the event, placed sixth at 14.83 (48-7 3/4), which was better than Solarin's previous best.
Also for the MSU Denver women,
Maya Ries qualified second for the 60 hurdles with a prelim time of 8.98, the 10
th-best time of the school-record holder's career.
And
Jessica Hobson was seventh in prelims for the 60 in 7.96, just off her career best of 7.93.
For the men,
Anthony Martinez qualified fourth for the 60 hurdles final with a prelim effort of 8.41. Freshman
Aden Guenther, in his first collegiate meet, became the program's fifth-fastest individual in the event with a time of 8.73, and
Sean Pecenka dropped to the sixth-fastest individual in the event in program history despite tying his career best of 8.78.
Brandon Simpson finished eighth in the weight throw with an effort of 13.96 meters (45-9 1/2)
