BOULDER, Colo. – MSU Denver's 1-2 sprinting punch of Allyssa Romero and Naleia Sowell was at it again Saturday, turning in some of the top times in program history at the Potts Invitational.
Romero, the school record holder in both the 200 and 400 meters indoors, turned in the program's second-fastest 400 time ever while finishing second in 57.06 seconds and also ran her third-fastest 200 time while finishing eighth in 25.45.
Meanwhile, Sowell's personal-best 400 time of 57.96 was good for third place and was the fourth-fastest ever run by a Roadrunner (behind only Romero), and her personal-best 200 of 25.81 was good for 16th place and made her MSU Denver's fourth-fastest individual in that event behind Romero (2023), Belle Kiper (2014) and Jaivion Lattimore (2022).
Noel Lopez also turned in a top time in the men's 3,000 meters, running a personal-best 8 minutes, 39.53 seconds for 21st place that makes him MSU Denver's sixth-fastest individual in that event.
And freshman Owen Clarke, in his first collegiate meet, became the Roadrunners' eighth-fastest individual in the men's 400 with his 13th-place clocking of 50.86.
"Overall it was a good meet," MSU Denver coach Janis Christopher sad. "The team performed at a level similar to, or better than, they performed in December before break. This is a very positive sign not only of where we are heading, but also of the team's level of commitment. To be able to maintain their fitness and speed over the break means they were putting in the work when no one was looking. That culture is how we will continue to grow and find success."
Also Saturday, Maya Ries finished fourth in the women's 60 hurdles in 9.04, Jessica Hobson was ninth in the 60 (8.03) and 20th in the 200 (27.02), and Tanis Chavez was 16th in the 800 (2:29.02).
Other highlights for the men included a 14th-place finish for Anthony Martinez in the 60 hurdles (8.54), 25th- and 26th-place showings in the mile by twins Jonathan (4:36.12) and Jordan Duran (4:36.24) and 3,000 finishes of 27th by JJ Ramey (8:48.0) and 33rd by Brenden Sands (8:55.18).
