COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Grace Solarin broke her own school record in the weight throw while finishing in second place and was among the highlights for MSU Denver on Saturday at the UCCS Invitational.
Solarin's effort of 15.47 meters (50 feet, 9 ¼ inches) broke the record 15.36 (50-4 ¾) she set at the same facility on Dec. 8. Solarin also placed fourth in the shot put at 11.80 (38-8 ¾), the school record holder's sixth-best individual event.
Also Saturday,
Allyssa Romero and
Naleia Sowell turned in another 1-2 finish in the women's 400 meters, with Romero clocking 58.47 seconds and Sowell running 58.74.
The Roadrunners got a first-place finish in the men's 400 as well, with true freshman
Owen Clarke running 52.36.
Mia Salas made her much-anticipated debut and placed second in the mile (5:17.21) and eighth in the 800 (2:21.62). Salas just missed cracking the program's individual top 10 in the mile, but now ranks seventh in program history individually in the 800.
Romero, Sowell, Salas and
Raygen Ivins combined to finish third in the 4x400 relay in 4 minutes, 4.11 seconds, a time that puts them third in program history before on the single-season and overall lists.
Maya Ries turned in a strong second-place finish in the 60 hurdles, finishing in 8.94 after running 8.91 in preliminaries – which is the school record holder's eighth-best time.
True freshman Breauna Sorenson also moved onto the program's individual list in the long jump with a 14
th-place effort of 5.04 (16-6 ½) that puts her in a tie for sixth at MSU Denver. She's tied with teammate
Taylor Weber, who placed 15
th at 5.01 (16-5 ¼).
For the men, distance stars
Noel Lopez and
JJ Ramey drew double duty, with Lopez finishing third in both the mile (4:27.05) and the 3,000 (9:02.29) and Ramey placing fifth (4:27.53) and sixth (9:06.07), respectively.
Brenden Sands was second in the 5,000 in 15:41.35,
Ty Schauer was fourth in the 800 (2:00.93) and
Anthony Martinez was fifth in the 60 hurdles in 8.44 after qualifying first in 8.43.
Also of note,
Jordan Duran was fifth in the men's 5,000 (16:03.90),
Lushous Davis was seventh in both the women's weight throw at 14.46 (47-5 ¼) and the women's shot put at 10.47 (34-4 ¼), and the men's 4x400 relay of Clarke,
Marcus Green,
Kevin Tashie and Schauer was third in 3:35.73.
