Box Score 2 DENVER – The games were extremely different, but MSU Denver won them both Saturday, sweeping New Mexico Highlands 17-7 in a first-game victory stopped after five innings before coming from behind for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Aaliyah Arellano's sixth-inning solo homer was the game winner in the second game.
In the opener,
Miki Berg was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and
Miah Hartvigsen was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and each hit a home run.
Kami Grammerstorf also homered for MSU Denver, which also had eight doubles (from seven different players, including Berg and Hartvigsen) among its 16 hits. The eight doubles set a new program record.
The Roadrunners scored four in each of the first two innings, and put up eight runs in the fourth after Highlands had crept within 8-5.
In the second game, Highlands scored two in the third before MSU Denver scored four fifth-inning runs on a two-run homer by
Hannah DiFabio and RBI doubles by
Shelby Robb and
Genevieve Bower.
After the Cowgirls tied the game in the bottom of the fifth,
Aaliyah Arellano's solo homer in the sixth put MSU Denver ahead to stay.
Jenna Medhus was the winning pitcher in relief in both games, including working 2 1/3 scoreless, one-hit innings.
"Jenna did a really nice job in relief today in both games," Van Wetzinga said. "The second game was much closer and she came in and was able to shut the door and be efficient the last two innings."
The series concludes Sunday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
