DENVER — MSU Denver freshman Karyna Werley has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Setter of the Week, becoming the Roadrunners' first RMAC Player of the Week honoree this season.
She is the first Roadrunner setter to win the award since Delaney Eckhardt on Oct. 21 of last year.
Werley showcased her versatility in a challenging two-match road swing, averaging 8.3 assists, 3.6 kills, 2.0 digs, and 1.0 blocks per set while hitting an efficient .400.
On Friday night at Colorado Mesa, Werley turned in a double-double with 11 kills and 22 assists, while also adding 10 digs. She hit .292 in the match, but despite her efforts the Roadrunners fell 3-1 to the Mavericks to see their 20-match RMAC winning streak come to an end.
She bounced back on Saturday with a career-best performance in a 3-1 win at Westminster, leading MSU Denver with 18 kills on .432 hitting, along with 15 assists, three blocks, and five digs. Her all-around play helped the Roadrunners hit .273 as a team and close the trip on a strong note.
Werley's impact as a freshman has been immediate, giving MSU Denver a dual threat as both a distributor and attacker. Behind her standout play, the Roadrunners are 9-2 overall and 2-1 in RMAC play heading into the heart of their conference schedule.
