@MSUDenverXCTF: Simpson Sets Program Record as Roadrunners Shine at Mines Invite

GOLDEN, Colo. — The MSU Denver indoor track and field team delivered a strong showing over the last two days at the Colorado School of Mines Winter Invite.

Competing on Friday and Saturday, the Roadrunners capped off the final day of the meet with several podium finishes and a historic performance in the throwing events.

The highlight of the weekend came from Brandon Simpson in the weight throw. Simpson etched his name further into the program's history books by launching a throw of 14.81 meters (48 feet, 7.25 inches). The mark broke his own previous school record of 14.67 meters, highlighting a weekend of consistent growth for the throwers. Simpson also added an 11th-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 13.57 meters.

The Roadrunners saw a dominant performance in the jumping pits from Kai Luna, who captured first place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.58 meters (47 feet, 10 inches). Luna also competed in the long jump on Friday, finishing 12th with a jump of 6.54 meters. In the high jump, Isaiah Williams secured a runner-up finish, clearing 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4.75 inches).

On the track, the sprinters and hurdlers were out in full force:

  • Kenny Greene led the way in the 60-meter dash, taking 3rd place in the finals with a blistering time of 6.90 seconds.
  • Anthony Martinez took 3rd in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles (8.32), following a strong preliminary heat where he clocked an 8.22.
  • Aden Guenther joined him in the hurdles final, placing 6th overall.
  • Andre Henry anchored the men's shot put efforts, finishing 8th in a competitive field with a throw of 13.95 meters.

Kathryn Rust put together a massive weekend, finishing 2nd overall in the Women's Pentathlon with a total of 3,073 points. Rust was a model of consistency across the five events, highlighted by a 2nd-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.89), a 2nd-place finish in the high jump (1.56m), and a 5th-place finish in the long jump.

Other notable performances for the women included:

  • Peyton Meier, who claimed 1st place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.94.
  • Raegan Moran, who qualified for the 60-meter dash finals and finished 7th with a time of 7.90.
  • Andrea Davis, who cleared 1.55 meters in the high jump to earn a 5th-place finish.
  • Payton Rusk, who rounded out the distance efforts with a 5th-place finish in the 5,000 meters.
