Catherine Guiles, a local graduate of Thornton High School, was a standout on both the volleyball and basketball teams in the early 1980s.  She played volleyball from 1982-85 and basketball during the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons.  She went on to graduate from Metro State in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in applied arts.

Guiles distinguished herself as one of the most prominent players to ever play at Metro State.  She earned several honors, including third team All-America as a freshman in volleyball in 1982 and honorable mention All-America in 1984, becoming the first All-American in volleyball history at Metro State.  She was also a two-time All-Continental Divide Conference honoree in 1984 and 1985 and two-time first team all-region player in 1983 and 1984.  In basketball, she was named to the Colorado Northwestern All-Tournament team in 1984.

Guiles helped lead the Roadrunner volleyball team to a combined four-year record of 116-82.  During that period, Metro State earned a third place finish in the NAIA national tournament in 1982.

On the basketball court, she was just as dominant as she was at the net.  She averaged 13.4 points and 7.8 rebounds in her two-year career.  If she qualified for the minimum games played, both career averages would rank in the top-10 in Metro State history.
