Patrick Mutombo led MSU Denver to its second national championship in three seasons in 2002-03, earning RMAC Player of the Year and All-America second team honors, and he named was the Most Outstanding Player of the Elite Eight after a three-game run that included 29 points and six rebounds in the championship-game win over Kentucky Wesleyan, for which he was named the Chevrolet Player of the Game. Also a reserve on the Roadrunners’ national championship team in 1999-2000, Mutombo is one of three players who were on both national title teams, and in four seasons he helped the program to a 113-22 overall record, a 63-13 mark in league play, and to two RMAC regular-season titles, three RMAC Tournament championships and four NCAA Tournament berths. He was named all-region first team in 2002-03 after earning second team honors in 2001-02, and he was named to the regional all-tournament team twice while also earning MVP honors at the 2003 RMAC Tournament.
 
Mutombo, who scored 1,360 career points, averaged 19.3 points per game as a senior, setting a program record that still stood through 2023 with 267 made field goals. His 250 field goals in 2001-02 was second in program history. He also had a career free throw percentage of .853, which ranked third in program history through 2023. For his career, he shot 51.7 percent from the field.

Mutombo also was successful in the classroom, twice earning Academic All-RMAC honors and graduating in 2003 with a degree in political science.
 
He played seven years professionally, including four seasons in Italy, and began a career as an assistant coach in the NBA in 2012, working for the Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks. He was part of the Raptors’ NBA championship team in 2019. He was also head coach of the Raptors’ G League affiliate for two seasons, 2020-21 and 2021-22.
