Postgame interview with Taylor Nicholls
DENVER, Colo. - The No. 6 Metro State women's soccer team scored three first half goals to win 5-0 over Adams State on Friday afternoon at Auraria Field. It was the eight straight win for the Roadrunners as they improved to 10-1-0 overall and 7-0-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Grizzlies fell to 3-8-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the RMAC.
Becca Mays (San Antonio, Texas/Madison H.S.) scored two goals in the first half and assisted on
Taylor Nicholls (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.)' goal as well as Metro State jumped out to a 3-0 lead before halftime.
Ashley Nemmers (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) and
Lex Peterson (Littleton, Colo./Denver Christian H.S.) added goals in the second half to secure the victory. For Nicholls and Peterson, it was each player's first career goal. Mays has now scored a goal in five consecutive games and Nemmers has in three straight games. The school record for consecutive games with a goal is nine.
Mays had a game-high seven shot attempts as Metro State outshot ASC 21-5.
Becca Maloney (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) stopped Adams State's only shot on goal and earned the victory. The one shot on goal Metro State allowed was its lowest since allowing zero shots on goal on Oct. 26, 2007, against Colorado Christian.
Metro State got on the board in the ninth minute as Mays scored on a header off a free kick from
Courtney Ryan (Chula Vista, Calif./Coronado H.S.).
Mays had three shots miss wide over the next 20 minutes, but she found Nicholls on a cross and Nicholls worked her way past the defender to score from the left side of the net past a charging goalkeeper for her first career goal.
Mays added her second goal of the game and her fourth and fifth points on a goal in the 42nd minute. Mays got in a 1-on-1 situation with an Adams State defender on the left side after a pass from
Aleah DeGeneres (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.), and flipped the ball over the Adams State goalkeeper with the outside of her right foot. It was Mays' RMAC-leading 12th goal this season.
The Roadrunners continued to pressure early in the second half and Nemmers found the net in the 68th minute on a rebound off a shot from
Madison McQuilliams (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield H.S.) from in front of the net.
Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) found McQuilliams in front after pushing the ball deep into the right side and centering the ball. Both Thomas and McQuilliams earned assists.
Peterson scored in the 87th minute from the top of the box after a crossing pass from
Annie Austin (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) from the right side.
Metro State face Nebraska-Kearney at home on Sunday at noon before opening a three-game road trip.
