GOLDEN, Colo. -
Metro State men's runner Rick Bogatay (Puyallup, Wash./Emerald Ridge H.S.) and women's runner Morgan Thomas (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman H.S.) each opened up the 2009-10 indoor track season by winning their respective races on Saturday at the Colorado Mines Alumni Extravaganza in Golden.  Bogatay took home the 1,500 meter championship for the men, finishing in 4:06.85, while Thomas won the women's 1,000 meters in 3:10.14.

Several others had strong performances, despite the majority of Metro State's cross country runners sitting out the competition after competing in the NCAA Cross Country Championships two weeks ago.  For the men, Derek Fiorini (Westminster, Colo./Ranum H.S.) finished third out of 26 in the 300m in 37.38 and seventh out of 30 runners in the 60m in 7.13.  He finished just .08 seconds off his school record time in the 60.

Newcomer Steve McMillion finished 16th in the 60m, while Kyle Hameister (Niwot, Colo./Niwot H.S.) and Jacob Wolford placed eighth and 10th, respectively in the 300m.  Todd Tolentino (Brush, Colo./Brush H.S.) finished sixth in the 1,000m and Shawn Lindbom (Wiggins, Colo./Wiggins H.S.), Chris LeBlanc (Littleton, Colo./Columbine H.S.) and Kellen Fockler (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs H.S.) finished 4th-6th in the 1,500m.

On the women's side, Jen Thomas (Aurora, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) took 12th place out of 32 runners in the 60 meters, finishing in 8.13, despite joining the team on Friday night.  Desiree Martin (Denver, Colo./George Washington H.S.) took 22nd in the 300m out of 39 competitors.  Xenia Flores (Brighton, Colo./Brighton H.S.) finished third behind Morgan Thomas and University of Colorado's Kelsey Barry in the 1,000 meters.  Taebrooke Rutter (Chelan, Wash./Chelan H.S.) and Kery Allen (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) finished second and third in the 1,500m.

Metro State will be off until Jan.15 when it travels to the Air Force All-Comers Meet.
