Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver track & field team completed the 2016 outdoor season, with the women finishing ninth and the men finishing eighth in the RMAC standings.
All-RMAC Honor Roll
On the women's team, junior
Lily Armijo (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) and sophomore
Mali Smith (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) were both honored by the RMAC. Armijo holds a 3.33 GPA and is undecided on her major while sophomore
Mali Smith (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) posted a 3.52 GPA and is majoring in psychology. The men's team had four individuals recognized by the conference. Senior
Erik Boss (Laramie, Wyo./Laramie H.S.), juniors
Chris Davis (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) and
Quin Erickson (Centennial, Colo./Smoky Hill H.S.), & sophomore
Christian Culpepper (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) all landed on the honor roll. Boss is majoring in psychology and human development while holding a 3.49 GPA. Davis held the highest GPA of any Roadrunner on the list, finishing with a 3.74 while majoring political science & philosophy. Culpepper was right behind him with a 3.57 GPA in his major of special education. Erickson is a criminal justice major and holds a GPA of 3.35.
Hughes Hype
Junior
Sarah Hughes (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield H.S.) had a dominating season for the Roadrunners competing in the triple jump. Hughes finished in the top two four times this season, with three first place finishes. Hughes finished first in the CSU Pueblo Pack Classic, CU Invitational, and in the CSM Invitational. The junior finished the season strong with a second place finish in the RMAC Championships, where she met a NCAA provisional qualifying mark after jumping 11.85m. This was the second time this season that Hughes met a qualifying mark, the first being at the CSM invitational when she jumped 11.94m. This jump was not only a personal best for Hughes, but also set a new school record for MSU Denver in the women's triple jump. Hughes was named first team All-RMAC for her performance in the triple jump. The junior is the first jumper in school history to earn the honor of first team all-conference.
Silacci Going Out Strong
Senior
Lauren Silacci (Paso Robles, Calif./Paso Robles H.S.) was continuing her momentum from the NCAA indoor track & field championships performance by finishing in the top three, three times during the outdoor season. The senior started off strong coming in first in the women's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:43.63 at the CSU Pueblo Classic. Silacci would place third in the women's 5000-meter run with a time of 19:17.44 at the same event. The next event Silacci finished well in was at the CSM Invitational, where the senior placed third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:49.21. Silacci ended the season competing in the women's-1500 meter run at the RMAC championships placing fifth with a time of 4:43.69.
Men's Dominance at CSU Pueblo Classic
The Roadrunners men track team a good performance during the CSU Pueblo Classic earlier this season. Senior
Erik Boss (Laramie, Wyo./Laramie H.S.) placed third in the men's 1500-meter run with a time of 4:03.18, with freshman
Kyle Jones (Aurora, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) right behind finishing fourth with a time of 4:05.78. The men's 5000-meter run was headed by junior
Jason Carey (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral H.S.) who finished second with a time of 15:05.13. Sophomores
Joey Bender (Aurora, Colo./Grandview H.S.) and
Christian Culpepper (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) placed fifth with a time of 15:49.04, and eighth with a time of 16:14.47. Freshman
Luis Ronquillo (Denver, Colo./CEC Middle College of Denver) rounded out the Roadrunners in thirteenth with a time of 16:41.07.
