Women's soccer: Offense erupts for eight goals as Price records hat trick

Box Score DENVER - Metro State scored its most goals in a game since 2008 on Friday in an 8-0 win over New Mexico Highlands at home. The Roadrunners improved to 11-4-2 overall and 8-3-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while NMHU fell to 5-10-2 and 3-8-2 in the RMAC.

It was the most goals scored since Metro's 8-0 win over Adams State on Oct. 3, 2008, and just the 13th time in school history MSU has scored eight or more goals.

Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) stole the show offensively, scoring three goals and recording an assist for a career-high seven points with her second career hat trick. She did so playing just 49 minutes in the game and attempting six shots. Maggie Rojas (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) also had her first career multi-goal game with two off the bench.

Metro State was coming off a scoring drought, scoring just one goal in its past three games, including a 2-1 loss at New Mexico Highlands on Oct. 14.

Sophomore Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) started the scoring just 7:12 into the game, finishing a cross from Price from the right corner.

Carly Nelson (Wheat Ridge, Colo./Wheat Ridge H.S.) scored her first goal of the season just two minutes later, this time finishing a cross from the Tess Hagenlock (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.).

Price started her big day at 10:16, less than a minute after Nelson's goal, with Nelson and Brandi Farley (Colorado Springs/Pine Creek H.S.) earning assists on the goal as Farley's one-touch pass found Price open at the top of the box.

Price scored again at 13:13 as Hagenlock notched her second assist of the game, leaving Price wide open in the center of the box as Metro State held a 4-0 lead very early in the game.

Rojas joined the scoring just before halftime at 41:47. Aubrey Fondy (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) drove up the right side and her shot fake caught the charging goalkeeper off-guard, leaving Rojas with an easy, wide-open goal to dribble into.

Price recorded her hat trick just 3:38 into the second half, scoring unassisted after dribbling through several defenders.

Freshman Shursteen Sharpe (Westminster, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) scored her second goal of the season at 69:25 for a 7-0 lead, using her speed to dribble past the defense up the right sideline for and beating the goalkeeper with a low shot.

Rojas scored her second goal of the season at 72:08 after a long pass from Hayley Renko (Aurora, Colo./Rangeview H.S.) left Rojas with an open shot inside the box, firing past the charging goalkeeper.

MSU outshot the Cowgirls 27-5 in the game, including 12-2 on goal.

Jordan Simkins (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) made two saves to earn a combined shutout with freshman Haley Milhollan (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.). Simkins made the biggest save of the day in the first minute, as she was able to deflect a hard shot from 30 yards away up and off the crossbar, allowing for the fast start for Metro.

Metro State will wrap up the regular season at home on Sunday and look to avenge an early-season loss to UC-Colorado Springs at noon.
