Women's soccer: Defensive mistakes drop Roadrunners at UCCS

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - Metro State fell 3-0 at UC-Colorado Springs on Sunday in women's soccer. The Roadrunners fell to 3-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Mountain Lions improved to 6-0-0 and 2-0-0 in the RMAC.

The Roadrunners trailed 2-0 at halftime after two defensive breakdowns. A mistake in the back line allowed Hannah Levett's pass to roll from the left side of the box to the right side, giving Ashley Hooper a wide open shot for the game's first goal at 27:16.

Hannah Rather scored on a long breakaway at 41:14 after beating a Metro State defender near midfield following a turnover created by Brooke Tominello, and dribbling the rest of the way.

Despite trailing on the scoreboard, MSU outshot UCCS 6-4 in the first half and had a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. However, all four of Metro's shots on goal were from 15+ yards out, easily saved by Mountain Lions goalkeeper Kelly Schroeder.

Despite the Roadrunners controlling play throughout the second half, another breakdown in the back line led to another breakaway goal for the Mountain Lions as Agnes Arnadottir at 59:48.

MSU had several chances to cut into the lead with four more shots on goal in the second half. In addition, Brandi Farley (Colorado Springs/Pine Creek H.S.) had a shot clank off the post in the 89th minute. Schroeder finished with eight saves.

Roadrunners goalkeeper Jordan Simkins (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman H.S.) stopped six shots, including a spectacular diving save to her right in the second half to hold the 3-0 deficit.

Metro State will look to get back on track at Colorado School of Mines at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
