GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Jennifer Hankins (Thornton, Colo./Legacy) fired a 5-over-par 77 and is tied for 41
st place after the first day of the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate, leading a short-handed Metropolitan State University of Denver contingent.
"Jenn has been playing well so far to start the season and was solid today," MSU Denver coach Stef Ferguson said. "She had a lot of good chances at birdies and hopefully more will fall tomorrow."
Kika Dzoan (Tracy, Calif./Venture Academy) shot an 82 and
Abby Dixon (Weed, Calif./Weed) shot 86 on the 6,087-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Estrella on Monday in the tournament hosted by Western New Mexico.
"Kika and Abby both hit the ball well, they both just had a few big numbers that added up quickly," Ferguson said. "They're looking to drop some shots tomorrow and to improve their individual rankings."
The Roadrunners' fourth player,
Winnie Shaw (Wichita, Kan./The Independent School), withdrew from the tournament. The tournament concludes Tuesday.
Cal State San Marcos had five players in the top 11 and leads the tournament with a 1-over par total of 289. Arkansas Tech is two strokes back and Western Washington trails by seven.
Colorado State-Pueblo, in fourth place and 13 strokes back, had the best performance of the seven Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schools in the 19-team field. MSU Denver doesn't qualify for the team rankings since it has just three players competing.
Peerada Piddon of Arkansas Tech, Lacy Sheldon of Western Washington, Drishti Karumbaya of Cal State East Bay and Sami Penor of Biola (Calif.) are tied for the individual lead after all shot 1-under 71s.
