SPEARFISH, S.D. – The MSU Denver women's track & field team scored nine points and is in seventh place after the opening day of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
Meanwhile, the Roadrunners' men picked up three points as
Noel Lopez finished sixth in the 5,000 meters and are tied for 10th.
For the women,
Grace Solarin was fourth in the weight throw with an effort of 15.90 meters (52 feet, 1 ¾ inches), and the distance medley relay team was an impressive fifth in 12 minutes, 32.08 seconds. The unit of
Tanis Chavez,
Raygen Ivins,
Audrynn Street and
Taylor Engram became the sixth-fastest DMR team on the program's yearly list and ran the ninth-fastest time of any MSU Denver DMR group.
Lopez, meanwhile, finished well ahead of his seeding and completed his run in 14:32.67. The school record holder in the event, Lopez ran his third-best time ever in a performance that ranks fifth overall among all MSU Denver competitors.
Several MSU Denver athletes also qualified for Saturday finals with strong preliminary performances on Friday.
Maya Ries qualified third in the 60 hurdles in 8.74, while in the 400 both
Allyssa Romero (fourth in 57.45) and
Naleia Sowell (fifth in 57.62) advanced. Romero just missed qualifying in the 200, where she was ninth in 25.66, while Sowell was 13
th in 25.93.
In the men's 60 hurdles,
Anthony Martinez qualified third in 8.31.
Also of note Friday,
Jocelyn Korbe was 11
th in the pentathlon while compiling a personal-best 2,861 points that is the fourth-best total ever by an MSU Denver competitor. Korbe is still the Roadrunners' second-best individual in the event.
And
Lushous Davis was ninth in the women's weight through with a personal-best toss of 15.66 meters.
For the men,
Sean Pecenka was 10
th in the 60 hurdles in a personal-best 8.53,
Owen Clarke was 12
th in the 400 (51.40) and
JJ Ramey was 16
th in the 5,000 (14:32.67). Pecenka moved up into a tie for third among all individuals in his event in program history.
