GOLDEN, Colo. – Grace Solarin had a school-record hammer throw while finishing in the top five in three events, and
Isaiah Williams became the second-best high umper in men's program history to lead MSU Denver on Friday at the Kit Mayer Classic.
Solarin heaved the hammer 48.03 meters (157 feet, 7 inches) to fifth place while surpassing her previous best of 45.61 by nearly eight feet. She was also third in the shot put at 11.51 (37-9 ¼), and fourth in the discus at 36.58 (120-0). Solarin moved up to 12
th in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in the hammer.
Williams skied 1.97 meters (6 feet, 5 ½ inches) for fourth in the high jump, putting the freshman sixth on the RMAC performance list. Only an unknown competitor, also with the last name of Williams, has jumped higher for MSU Denver – that Williams went 1.98 meters in 1972.
MSU Denver won both javelin events, with
Brandon Simpson leading the men with an effort of 47.74 (156-7) and
Brooklynn Jones firing off a season-best 38.62 (126-8). Simpson's twin brother, Jacob, was third in the javelin at 43.64 (143-2).
On the track,
Owen Clarke won the men's 200 meters and finished fifth in the 400. He ran the 200 in 22.33 seconds, just off his personal best, and was fifth in the 400 in 49.48.
Fellow freshman
Kevin Tashie also had a strong day, finishing second in the 200 in 22.49 and fourth in the 100 in 11.14.
Also Friday,
Brenden Sands placed second in the 5,000 meters in 15:33.03,
Trenton Smith was ninth in the 110 hurdles in a personal-best 15.47, and in the 1,500,
JJ Ramey was 11
th in 4:06.63 while
Jordan Duran was 12
th in 4:07.02 and twin brother Duran was 15
th in 4:08.07. Veteran
Ty Schauer was eighth in the 800 in a personal-best 1:57.32.
For the women,
Jocelyn Korbe led the long-jump contingent with a fifth-place distance of 5.22 meters (17 -1 ½ inches), and she was also fifth in the shot at 11.10 (36-5). Thrower
Lushous Davis was fourth in the shot at 11.14 (36-6 ¾), sixth in the hammer at 47.35 (155-4) and seventh in the discus at 35.77 (117-4).
Jessica Hobson was fifth in the 100 in 12.86 and
Raygen Ivins was seventh in the 200 in 27.50, while
Tanis Chavez and
Peyton Meier turned in personal bests in the 800 while finishing 13
th and 14
th, respectively, in 2:22.77 and 2:23.00.
