Korbe, Jones score points in javelin

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Naleia Sowell and Taylor Engram set program records and Jocelyn Korbe and Brooklynn Jones combined to score three points in the javelin to lead MSU Denver on Saturday at the second day of the RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Sowell sprinted to a 24.75-second clocking in preliminaries of the 200 meters, easily topping the 24.90 she ran earlier this season. Sowell just missed out on qualifying for the final, finishing 10th. Allyssa Romero and former school record holder Claire Hummel also had quality races in the prelims, finishing 11th in 24.92 and 13th in 25.09, respectively.

Engram, meanwhile, ran 40 seconds faster than her previous season best in the 3,000 steeplechase and just missed scoring a point by finishing ninth in 11:18.01. Her school-record time eclipsed the previous best of Rachel Shimabukuro, who ran 11:21.03 for sixth place at the 2016 RMAC Championships.

In the javelin, Korbe threw a personal-best 35.69 meters (117 feet, 1 inch) for seventh place, improving her second-place standing on MSU Denver's all-time list behind Jones, who was eighth at 35.62 (116-10 ¼).

Korbe, 12th in Friday's high jump, is also competing in the seven-event heptathlon that started Saturday and is in seventh place with 2,621 points three events to go: she was third in the shot put at 10.73 (35-2 ½), fourth in the high jump at 1.52 (4-11 ¾), seventh in the 200 in 27.0, and eighth in the 100 hurdles at 16.22.

Also of note for the MSU Denver women, Maya Ries qualified fourth for the finals of the 100 hurdles in 14.44, and Marissa Bruno was 18th in the 10,000 in 39:20.04, putting her eighth individually in MSU Denver history.

For the men, both Sean Pecenka and Trenton Smith qualified for the finals of the 110 hurdles, finishing seventh in 15.19 and eighth in 15.36, respectively. Smith's time is a personal best.

Both Elijah Garcia and Ty Schauer ran personal bests in the 800 prelims, with Garcia placing 16th in 1:55.50 and Schauer 18th in 1:56.25.
